“Kofia” Hat Flower Collage
We create art from the heart. Each art piece is one-of-a-kind. Even if we try to duplicate, nothing is ever the same. We use recycle or new tanga and paint heartfelt quotes and/or quirky drawings to make each piece unique.
This piece is made from cowrie collected on our beach shores. This piece is a collage made of traditional recycled Swahili kofia. The kofia is a traditional worn by Swahili men in East Africa. The hat originated from the Coast and is hand made delicately into an elegant floral, or abstract threaded design that make them each a unique piece of art. Each kofia takes about a month to make and is therefore very expensive to buy. These hats are therefore typically gifted for special occasions and worn for many decades if well kept.
Lamu is renowned for having one of the best artisans who still make kofia by hand. We offer recycling opportunities for recycling old kofia to remake them into collages so that their story can continue in a new form of art.
