Lamu Dhow Eye Painting (Medium)
We create art from the heart. Each art piece is one-of-a-kind. Even if we try to duplicate, nothing is ever the same. We use recycle or new tanga and paint heartfelt quotes and/or quirky drawings to make each piece unique.
This Painting is of the Lamu “Dhow Eye”. The Eye of the Dhow is one of the symbols of identity in the Lamu archipelago. Historically, in the Swahili culture of Lamu, the symbol was only engraved on marine vessels, including boats, dhows and canoes. The moon and star symbolise tools used for navigation by sailors to be able to sea their way in the ocean, hence the name the Eye of the Dhow. Today the Dhow Eye is popular symbol of Lamu’s dentity and heritage. It is imprinted on almost everything in houses and in public, clothes, furniture, art, bags, buildings, household goods, and much more. It is especially popular with tourists for souvenirs.
